A Taster's Journey is a newsletter on food, wine and travel. After 15 years of studying, tasting, teaching, and selling wine, I created this newsletter to not only share my passion about wine, but of food and travel as well. Each month I hope to share wines that I am drinking, food that is in season, restaurants that I have enjoyed, and places I have traveled. Enjoy!"

Thanksgiving – add a twist

November 23rd, 2003

Thanksgiving is a holiday based on tradition and celebrated with food. Memories of turkey, stuffing, and six different vegetables come to mind. But did you ever notice how the family feast varies very little from year to year? I was almost decapitated when I suggested substituting a goose for the traditional turkey; although after much discussion, I was allowed to offer turkey and goose. Now that is what I call a feast. Making radical changes in your Thanksgiving meal is very traumatic to some; but here are a few ways to add a twist to that special meal…

  • Add a few ounces of truffle mousse pate to your stuffing to add another level of richness.
  • Grate fresh horseradish into your mashed potatoes.
  • Serve a platter of roasted root vegetables and include a few unique varieties such as chioggia beets,
    celeriac, and parsnip.
  • Puree your carrots and add a little cinnamon or nutmeg.
